One thing about solar eclipses that can’t quite be captured in photos is how strange the light is when approaching totality. Your eyes can tell that it’s darker, but there are still sharp shadows, so it’s not the kind of darkness you’d experience from a stormy day or the evening twilight. The mid-day sunlight is still there, it’s just very dim and eerie. It’s hard to tell in the photos, but it got so dim that this photo, shortly before totality, was taken at 1/30″, whereas the ones I took an hour before were at 1/750″ or so—a difference of almost 5 stops.
